Class 4 Agenda

1. Weekly Tech tools and techniques = Twitter

The world of print journalism is changing profoundly. Jeff Bezos, the owner of Amazon who just bought the Washington post compares newspapers to horses. He points out that we used to use horses for all transportation purposes. We still use horses but for fun, sport or specialized elite activities. So newspapers will be around but they just won't be the workhorses (sorry) of journalism.

Mathew Ingram, a social media journalism commentator points out some interesting flaws in Bezos' arguments. The main flaw that Ingram points out is that the move from print to digital is more like going from cars back to horses. We used to get our news in a much less aggregated way and digital mediums are again making the individualized new more possible.

One of the new workhorses of journalism is Twitter. If you were following the #WestgateMall incident in Nairobi, Kenya this week you will have an idea of the impact that Twitter is having on journalism at all levels and events certainly seem to support Ingram's criticism of Bezos's horse metaphor. In the mall incident both the attackers and the Kenyan security forces used Twitter extensively. They took their message directly to the world through Twitter rather than rely exclusively on conventional news outlets. In a post-industrial age the news has become disaggregated.

The use of social media and Twitter, specifically is attracting a scholarly attention.

 It also attracts silly attention.

History of Journalism

Create a 250 word entry on some aspect of the history of journalism. You can include images or video.

Possible topic:

Examine the changes being considered by the US senate to the journalist shield laws, the laws that allow journalist to protect their information sources.

See, for example:

http://www.emptywheel.net/2013/07/14/why-members-of-the-news-media-should-welcome-a-shield-for-the-act-of-journalism

Essentially, the government is trying to control the news by defining who qualifies as a journalist. The effect of the changes is that only corporate media will be protected by shield laws.  Other journalist will not be able to assure their sources that their identities will be protected.

In 1765, the British government attempted to control the news by imposing the Stamp Act. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamp_Act_1765 which stipulated that all "news" could only be published on paper that carried the government stamp.

What parallels can be drawn?
